Every district also has a District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) office offering free legal aid to those who qualify — ask at your local district court for the nearest one.

Your Rights During Arrest (Article 22)

  1. You have the right to know the grounds of your arrest immediately.
  2. You have the right to inform a friend, relative, or other person of your arrest and where you are being held.
  3. You must be produced before a magistrate within 24 hours of arrest, excluding travel time.
  4. You have the right to consult a legal practitioner of your choice, and to be defended by one.
  5. You cannot be detained in custody beyond 24 hours without a magistrate’s authorization.
